What are state programmes for training?

Many German federal states fund training with a Bildungsscheck or Weiterbildungsbonus. What is typical and where to find current programmes.

In brief

State programmes (Landesförderung) (Bildungsscheck, Weiterbildungsbonus, Programme of the federal state): Several federal states (Bundesländer) fund vocational training with their own programmes, often called Bildungsscheck (education cheque) or Weiterbildungsbonus (training bonus). They supplement the funding from the employment agency.

How state programmes typically work

Usually the state covers part of the course costs for working people who live or work in that state. Counselling at a recognised body is often required beforehand. The amount, target group and conditions vary greatly and change frequently; many programmes run only for a limited time or with funds from the European Social Fund.

Typical conditions

Common requirements are a place of residence or work in the state, counselling before the start, a personal contribution and registration only after approval. Anyone who books the course beforehand often loses the funding. Because programmes change, always check the conditions in the current programme text.

Where to find current programmes

The federal funding database (Förderdatenbank des Bundes) lists programmes of the federal government, the states and the EU. Check there or with the responsible state ministry what currently applies in your state. We deliberately do not give amounts, because they quickly become outdated.

In practice: an example

You work full-time and want to pay for a course yourself because the education voucher is not an option for you. In that case it is worth looking at your federal state's programme. Search the funding database for your state and the keyword Weiterbildung (training), and check whether counselling is required before registration. Only register for the course after that.

We clarify with you which funding route fits your situation and look for an approved course in our course finder. All funding routes at a glance are on our funding page, and you can request an appointment here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine state funding with the education voucher?

For the same training, usually not. State programmes are mostly aimed at working people, the education voucher mainly at unemployed people. The exact rules are set out in the respective programme.
