Comparing funded courses: an 8-point checklist

Two courses with similar titles can differ a lot. These eight questions help you find the right one before you go to your advisory meeting.

Lars Ritter 4 min read

The course finder sometimes lists several courses on the same topic. Which one is right? The following checklist helps you compare. Take ten minutes for each course in question.

The checklist

  1. Approval: does exactly this course have an AZAV approval number? More in AZAV approval explained.
  2. Certificate: does the course end with a certificate, an exam before a chamber or a vendor certification? Do job ads ask for it?
  3. Content: do the modules match the requirements of the jobs you want? Is there content you already know?
  4. Format: live online, self-study phases, on site or a mix? How many hours per week?
  5. Schedule: full-time or part-time? Does that fit with childcare, care duties or a side job?
  6. Support: are there fixed contact persons, office hours, small groups?
  7. Practice: are there projects, an internship or real case studies?
  8. Start and duration: when is the next start date, and does the duration match your voucher?

How to use the list

Write a short answer for each point. In the end, one or two courses usually remain, which you take to the advisory meeting. How the meeting works is described in How to apply for an education voucher.

If you are unsure, send us the course codes from the course finder. We tell you what speaks for and against each course.

Häufige Fragen

Is a more expensive course automatically better?

No. Costs depend on duration, group size and format. What matters more is whether content and certificate match your goal. With funded courses you do not pay the course fees yourself anyway.

How do I know whether a certificate is in demand?

Search job ads in your region and note which certificates or skills they name. These ads help twice: when choosing a course and as justification in the meeting with the employment agency or job centre.

Can I see a course before deciding?

Many providers offer information sessions or trial lessons. Ask for them before you commit.
